Three Dead, Toddler Among Injured After Shooting at Seattle's Bite of Seattle Festival

Three people are dead and four others injured after gunfire broke out Sunday evening at the Bite of Seattle food festival, one of the city's largest annual public gatherings, held on the grounds of Seattle Center beneath the Space Needle.

Seattle Police say the shooting happened just after 6 p.m. as thousands of attendees an estimated 100,000 visitors were on the grounds daily during the three-day event moved through vendor stalls and live music near the city's most recognizable landmark. Investigators believe the violence began as two people shooting at each other, rather than an attack directed at the crowd, though the chaos it triggered engulfed festivalgoers regardless of who the intended targets were.

What happened?

Officers arrived in the 200 block of Thomas Street just after 6 p.m. and moved to clear the area. Seattle Fire Department personnel attempted to save two victims at the scene but were unsuccessful, and those two were pronounced dead there. A third victim, a 56-year-old woman, died after being transported to Harborview Medical Center, where several of the other wounded were also taken for treatment.

Of the survivors, officials said a 23-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and a 2-year-old child were listed in stable condition as of Sunday night. Investigators told reporters that two firearms had been recovered from the scene, and one suspect remained at large while authorities cautioned there could be additional suspects still unaccounted for. 

Assistant Police Chief Tyrone Davis, addressing reporters at a late-night briefing, said seven people had been shot in total and that the person taken into custody was "a young person" who was being questioned by investigators. Confusion over suspects in custody

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson initially told the public that two suspects had been apprehended, before her office issued a correction later Sunday night clarifying that only one person was actually in custody. The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said the suspect who was arrested is expected to appear in court Monday morning, with more details to follow after that hearing.

Scenes of panic

Witnesses described a scramble to escape gunfire amid crowds still browsing food stalls. One festival employee recounted hearing several shots before yelling at a coworker to run, then staying behind to help others over a fence to safety, describing pulling children, men, and women over the barrier as people scrambled to get away. Another attendee recalled hearing roughly six or seven gunshots ring out while eating with friends near a nearby concert stage, followed by a surge of people running toward them. 

Video shared widely on social media showed people sheltering inside the Space Needle itself, crouched behind merchandise displays and support pillars in its ground-floor lobby as the shooting unfolded outside.

Investigation and response

Multiple agencies joined the investigation, including the FBI, ATF, Seattle Police's homicide and Gun Violence Reduction units, King County law enforcement, and Washington State Patrol. Officials said no security cameras covered the specific area where the shooting occurred, complicating efforts to reconstruct the sequence of events, and police have asked anyone with information to come forward.

The disruption extended beyond the festival itself: the Seattle Monorail was shut down for the remainder of Sunday, and the Pacific Science Center announced it would remain closed Monday, offering refunds to ticket holders.

Community and political reaction

Mayor Wilson called the shooting "an act of horrific violence," adding that families affected are living through the worst moment of their lives while a community built around culture and connection is left trying to understand how it ended in gunfire. She said no one should have to weigh the risk of being shot simply for attending an event or gathering with friends in their own city.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson said he was receiving ongoing briefings and that the Washington State Patrol's SWAT team had been dispatched to assist Seattle police at the department's request, while offering condolences to victims' families and support for first responders. U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Seattle, also issued a statement of condolence and said her office was coordinating with city and state leaders for updates.

Context

The shooting adds to what has been a difficult year for public safety at large American gatherings. According to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, Sunday's incident is at least the 271st mass shooting recorded in the U.S. so far this year. Bite of Seattle, billed as the largest free-admission food festival in Washington state, typically draws up to 350,000 attendees over its three-day run and features hundreds of vendors alongside live music.

As of Monday, the second suspect remains at large, and the investigation is ongoing. Police have asked residents to continue avoiding the Seattle Center area while the inquiry continues.
